What: A story is what happens in a book; plot is the structure of what happens in a book, as well as the techniques the author employs to control pacing, tension, character development, and reader reaction. In this INTENSIVE master class with editor and writer Cheryl Klein, we’ll examine the care and feeding of a plot, including a number of those techniques, the DNA of action and emotional development in a novel, and the uses of subplots. You’ll also learn methods for analyzing your own plot and identifying its strengths and weaknesses, and tips for completing a thoughtful and effective revision. Participants will be asked to create a bookmap of their novel before the event (instructions will be provided), and to read one particular novel and a few handouts (also to be announced/provided later).

Register ONLY if you have completed a MG/YA novel manuscript.
At the close of registration, registrants will receive instructions from Cheryl Klein on how to prepare bookmaps for this class. Each registrant MUST bring their bookmap to the Master Class on Plot.
Registration opens at 10 am on January 20, 2012 for SCBWI Midsouth and SCBWI Carolinas members. Sign in at scbwi.org and see your Midsouth or Carolinas regional page, then click on Regional News for instructions on how to register. You may view these instructions before January 20th, but you may not actually register until January 20th at 10 am.
If the workshop is not filled by February 3, 2012, registration will open for SCBWI members outside SCBWI Midsouth and SCBWI Carolinas.

Late registration rates begin February 13, 2012, and all registration will close February 20, 2012, to allow enough time for registrants to create their bookmaps for the event.
